Cofeb y Morrisiaid | The Morris Monument

Codwyd Cofeb y Morrisiaid dros ganrif yn ôl i goffáu a dathlu teulu enwog o lythyrwyr o blwyf Penrhosllugwy. Yr hynaf o’r pedwar brawd, a adwaenir fel Morrisiaid Môn oedd Lewis Morris, ac ef oedd y galluocaf, mae’n debyg; galwai ei hun yn Llewelyn Ddu o Fôn hefyd. Roedd yn wladgarwr, ysgolhaig, bardd, mapiwr a hynafiaethydd.

Gyda’i frodyr, hwn oedd pen-llythyrwr llên Cymru ei gyfnod. Mae mil o’u llythyrau wedi goroesi ar gyfartaledd ac maent yn llawn gwybodaeth am fywyd llenyddol a diwylliannol y cyfnod, i gyd wedi eu hysgrifennu mewn Saesneg a Chymraeg cyhyrog.

Fe’i magwyd gyda’i frodyr Richard a sefydlodd Cymdeithas y Cymrodorion, Wiliam oedd yn naturiaethwr a Siôn yn llongwr, ar fferm Pentre’ Eirianell, Penrhosllugwy, Môn.

Yn ddiweddar, bu i’r Cyngor Cymuned osod carreg newydd gyda’r tanysgrifiad arno gan bod y gwreiddiol yn dirywio.

The Morris monument was erected over a century ago to commemorate and celebrate a famous family of letter writers from the Parish of Penrhoslligwy.

The eldest of the four brothers, known as ‘Morrisiaid Môn’ was Lewis Morris who was allegedly the most learned, also called himself ‘Llewelyn Ddu o Fôn’. He was a patriot, scholar, bard, cartographer and antiquary.

Along with his brothers, he was the leading literature letter-writer of this period in Wales. There are on average a thousand of their letters that have survived and they are full of information about literature and culture of that time, all written in strong Welsh and English.

He was raised on Pentref Eirianell Farm, Penrhoslligwy with his brothers Richard who established a Fellowship Society, William as a Naturalist and Siôn as a Seaman.
